In 1880 the continent of Africa was largely unexplored by Europeans. Less than thirty years later, only Liberia and Ethiopia remained unconquered by them. The rest - 10 million square miles with 110 million bewildered new subjects - had been carved up by five European powers (and one extraordinary individual) in the name of Commerce, Christianity, 'Civilization' and Conquest. The Scramble for Africa is the first full-scale study of that extraordinary episode in history

This innovative collection builds on current multimodal research to showcase image-centric practices in contemporary media, unpacking the increasing extent to which the visual plays a principal role in modern day communication. The volume begins by providing a concise overview of the history and development of multimodal research with respect to image-centricity, with successive chapters looking at how image-centricity emerges over time, unfolds in relation to language and other features in global design strategies. Bringing together contributions from both established and emerging researchers in multimodality and social semiotics, the book presents case studies on a variety of image-centric genres and domains, including magazines, advertising discourse, multimedia storytelling, and social media platforms. The aims of the book are, to interrogate the new multimodal genres, relations, forms of analysis, and methods of production that emerge from a greater reliance on visual components. Refining and broadening current understandings of image-centricity in today's media sphere, this collection will be of particular interest to scholars and students in multimodality, social semiotics, applied linguistics, language and media, and discourse analysis.

In this book, noted financial analyst Pascal Blanqué discusses the concept of economic freedom and analyzes the theoretical and practical issues involved in its attainment. To fully explore the meaning of economic freedom, Blanqué creates a "Subject" that can reason and act in a structured financial environment. The Subject is a personification of the theory of homo economicus, a general concept that humans are narrowly self-interested and motivated by their personal goals, as opposed to wanting to cooperate for the greater good.Blanqué turns his Subject loose in a virtual economic world filled with image-objects of varying value and observes as it becomes familiar with those objects, learns their worth in the financial market, and attempts to obtain them. Many factors come into play in this striving for personal gain, including the presence of other self-interested actors who can affect the Subject's behavior through competition, conflict, and consensus. Based on his findings from this exercise, Blanqué establishes the conditions for a possible economic and financial norm in the real world as well as the proper amount of regulation to keep it running smoothly. The second part of The Social Economy of Freedom introduces the philosophical foundations for the modern idea of economic freedom. Blanqué argues that development of the economic Subject's identity and actions are shaped by the interaction and observation of others, and it is therefore interdependent. He demonstrates that the question of economic freedom is, to a great extent, based on the collective forms of freedom that accompany the development of the action process. Such collective forms contain the conditions for a norm and therefore for regulation in the face of conflicts.

Social Science Concepts and Measurement offers an updated look at the theory and methodology of concepts for the social sciences. Emphasizing that most concepts are multilevel and multidimensional, this revised edition continues to bring the qualitative and quantitative closer together, with new chapters devoted to scaling, aggregation, and the methodological links between the semantics of concepts and numeric measures. In addition, it stresses that concepts are used for description and causal inference, and contain normative judgments. Initial chapters focus on conceptualization, followed by chapters on issues of measurement. The textbook examines concepts in the international arena (such as the global performance indicators used by international organizations like the UN and the World Bank), as well as classic paired concepts such as poverty and wealth, democracy and authoritarianism, and war and peace. Additionally, it explores such topics as typologies, hybrid concepts, and how complex concepts constitute complex theories. The volume serves as a guide to the methodology of concepts in the classroom and is accompanied by more than two hundred exercises.
